Red-top tube plain – To transport swab samples or tissue, remove the cap, place the sample in the tube (break off the swab handle if necessary) and put the cap back on and pull off Please contact the laboratory before taking the patient to obtain the correct tubes for metal analysis or other testing, which are specified in the individual test lists.
Which blood tube colors are there for which test?
If a Coag tube (light blue) is the only or first tube to be drawn, a 5 ml disposal tube must be drawn first.
What is the difference between a red upper tube and an SST tube?
This tube must be completely filled; the ratio of blood to anticoagulant is crucial for valid coagulation results. After the tube is filled with blood, immediately turn the tube gently over several times to prevent coagulation. Immediately after filling, shake the tubes ten times (just hard enough) to ensure that the entire inner surface of the tube is covered with blood. This tube should not be used for drug analysis as some drugs can bind to the gel and give incorrect results.
For information on the sample collection process, see the order of collection with multiple tube collections and the tests found elsewhere in this lab testing guide to see sample specifications What is each tube used for
phlebotomy?
Blood should NEVER be poured from one tube to another as the tubes may have different additives or coatings (see illustrations at the end). When frozen plasma is required, place the plastic transport tubes immediately in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator and tell your professional service agent that you have a frozen sample to collect. Remove the stopper and carefully suck all serum out of the cells, using a separate disposable pipette for each tube. With injection technology, venipuncture is performed without a direct connection to the collection tube.
